About Bayou City
The United States Pony Clubs, Inc., develops character, leadership, confidence and a sense of community in youth through a program that teaches the care of horses and ponies, riding and mounted sports.
Bayou City Pony Club membership is focused on the central to south side of Houston and surrounding areas, and mounted meetings are primarily held at W-S Stables near Almeda and Beltway 8. Special events, camps, preps, and meetings threatened by weather may be held at alternate locations with prior notice.
The Bayou City Pony Club program focuses on dressage (Western and English), cross country, show jumping, mounted games, obstacles, tetrathlon, quiz, and western riding. We can help accommodate members interested in other Pony Club disciplines (for example, for those interested in Foxhunting, by connecting with a nearby Hunt).
During "unmounted" meetings members learn about feeding, hoof care, veterinary care, and other areas of horse management. Under adult supervision, the more experienced Pony Clubbers instruct and assist younger members.
Our Pony Club members are encouraged (but not required) to work their way through progressive Standards of Proficiency, which test knowledge and riding ability. We support and assist our members to achieve certifications by building our programs around the Standards and offering certification preps.
"Ponies" in United States Pony Club
Pony Club provides opportunities for instruction and competition in English and Western riding, horse sports, and horse management for children and young adults up to 25 years of age. The term "pony" reflects the age of the members, rather than the size of the mount. Horses and ponies of many different breeds, shapes, and sizes are seen in Pony Club activities.
It is not necessary for a child to own a horse or a pony to participate in and enjoy Pony Club. For riding activities, members must have access to a mount; Bayou City Pony Club can arrange access to horses or ponies as needed for our members.
